Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD) is a hormonal condition that develops in women. The delicate balance of hormones maintained in the female body, which regulates menstruation, ovulation, and reproduction, is affected in this condition. It is mainly detected in women during their prime age for conceiving, which is between 15 and 45 years of age.

This disorder targets the hormone secretion by ovaries, which are the primary reproductive organs. Along with the female hormones of estrogen and progesterone, the ovaries are also ideally meant to produce the male hormone androgen in small quantities. These hormones work together in harmony to stimulate ovulation. Ovulation is a stage when eggs are released from small sacs called follicles, located in the ovaries. PCOD upsets the balance of hormone production and causes a higher level of androgens to be produced. This imbalance not only hinders the maturing of the eggs in the follicle and prevents its release but can also lead to the formation of several small cysts in the ovaries.

The increased production of androgens causes a disturbance in the regular menstruation cycle and also impacts the ovulation process. A few other symptoms of PCOD include excessive acne, weight gain, increased body hair growth, etc.

Despite the leaps of advancement in science, no particular cause has been determined for PCOD. However, certain other factors have been identified that may contribute towards this disorder:

·         Higher levels of insulin
The production of extra insulin by the body directly correlates with an increase in male hormones secreted by the ovaries. The initial trigger point of
PCOD is this overproduction of androgens. Hence, an excess of insulin can be a causative factor for the disorder.

·         Influence of genetics
It has been established by medical science over time that PCOD can develop due to the genetic history of the same.

·         Inflammation
Higher levels of inflammation are linked to an increase in androgens and hence is a contributory factor for the disorder.

It is a common misconception that health conditions such as PCOD can only be treated through medical and allopathic methods. However, we often tend to ignore the arsenal of healthcare treatments that are available in our homes. A healthy Indian diet plan is a treasure trove of beneficial vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that can help improve overall health and immunity and treat or prevent specific conditions like PCOD.

Seed cycling is an emerging technique whose utility is being recognized in preventing and curing PCOD. The term “seed cycling” refers to a steady rotation through which various seeds are consumed during the menstrual cycle. Seeds such as flaxseed and pumpkin seeds must be consumed during the former half of one's cycle. This helps maintain balanced estrogen levels, which contribute to the development and maturing of the eggs. In the latter half, it is recommended to consume white sesame and sunflower seeds, as these manage the progesterone levels.

Another simple home remedy that can be adopted is reducing the consumption of wheat and other glutinous flour. Gluten is an ingredient that must be avoided when dealing with the disorder because it affects the acidic levels in the gut and thereby causes hormonal imbalance. A diet plan for PCOD must include other types of grains such as gram flour or coconut flour, which not only eliminate gluten from meals but are also rich in protein and fibers.

As has been enumerated above, the key to achieving and maintaining good health is healthy food. With the inclusion of all the essential vitamins and minerals, a proper diet leads to the holistic development of one's physical and mental health.

Besides its importance in general healthcare, food has also been recognized for its curative properties. The fact that a disorder as nuanced as PCOD can be treated simply through a proper diet is nothing short of magical.
